Correcting a VAT return: in your next return or with a supplement

In short

A VAT error of at most € 1,000 is processed in your next return without notification; if the difference is larger you are required to file a supplement for the correct period.

  • The € 1,000 threshold applies per correction and is the balance, not the amount per invoice; you may not split a larger correction.
  • If you owe extra, tax interest runs from the moment you underpaid, so the sooner you correct the better.
  • A penalty normally does not follow for a mistake you correct on your own initiative, but it does if you knew it was wrong.
  • You can correct up to five years back, matching the VAT assessment period; after that neither party can act.

A forgotten purchase invoice, a turnover figure typed in wrong, VAT booked at the wrong rate: it happens to everyone. The Dutch tax office takes a practical view, as long as you correct it once you spot it. There are two routes, and which one you take depends on a single figure: € 1,000. This article shows which side of that line you are on and exactly what to do.

The € 1,000 threshold

If the difference between what you declared and what you should have declared is no more than € 1,000, you may process it in your next VAT return. You add the amount to the box it belongs in, or take it off. Nothing has to be reported separately, you get no separate assessment and you pay no extra charge.

That € 1,000 is the balance per correction, not per invoice. If you correct three forgotten receipts of € 200 VAT at once, you are at € 600 and stay within the threshold. If together they exceed it, the supplement obligation applies to the whole. How filing a supplement works is covered in a separate article.

Which route fits your situation

In practice nearly every correction falls into one of these four categories. The difference lies mainly in the moment you spot the mistake.

What a correction costs you

If you have to pay extra VAT, the tax office charges interest from the moment you underpaid. The sooner you correct, the less interest you owe. In avoiding tax interest you can read exactly how that interest runs.

A penalty is normally not imposed for a voluntary correction, as long as it concerns a genuine mistake and you report it yourself. That only changes if you knew it was wrong and left it. If you are getting money back there is no legal urgency, but you are leaving money on the table that is yours.

Worked example: forgotten purchase invoice with € 480 VAT

Period containing the mistake
Second quarter
Forgotten input VAT
€ 480
Under the threshold?
Yes, less than € 1,000
What you do
Add to box 5b in the third quarter

Result: You reclaim an extra € 480 in your third quarter return. No supplement, no separate report, no interest. But do note in your records that this amount belongs to the second quarter.

Corrections over a closed year

If you only spot the mistake once the year is over, the same threshold applies. Under € 1,000 you may include it in a return for the new year. Above that you file a supplement for the correct year, not for the current one. The window for this is five years, matching the VAT assessment period.

Always reconcile your annual figures with your VAT returns before filing your income tax return. A difference between the turnover in your accounts and the sum of your VAT returns is exactly where an audit starts, and it is the easiest difference to find now rather than in three years.

Frequently asked questions

May I correct several small mistakes together?

Yes, as long as the balance of that correction stays under € 1,000. If together they exceed it, the supplement obligation applies to the whole and you cannot split them up to stay under the line.

Will I get a penalty if I report it myself?

For an ordinary mistake that you correct on your own initiative, normally not. You do pay tax interest if you owe extra.

How far back can I correct?

Up to five years back. After that the tax office can no longer levy, but you can no longer reclaim either.

What if I paid too much VAT?

The same rules apply in the other direction. Up to € 1,000 you settle it in your next return; above that you file a supplement and get the amount back.
