A food truck is a popular way to start in hospitality without the high costs of premises. But as a mobile entrepreneur you also have bookkeeping that must be correct. You work with cash, different VAT rates and changing locations. This article explains what to arrange to get your food truck off to a good fiscal start.

Registration and permits

You register with the Chamber of Commerce, after which you automatically receive a VAT number. In addition, for a food truck you often need a pitch permit from the municipality and you must meet the rules of the Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority for food safety and hygiene.

Bear in mind that permit costs and inspections are business costs you may deduct. Keep the proof and invoices, so your bookkeeping is complete from the start.

VAT and your cash records

Just like in regular hospitality, you charge 9 percent VAT on food and non-alcoholic drinks and 21 percent on alcohol. Because you have many small, cash transactions, a reliable cash register system is important. It splits your turnover automatically per rate and gives you a watertight daily statement.

Count your cash every day and register your card receipts. With a food truck it's all about small margins and many transactions, so neat daily bookkeeping prevents you from losing track.

Costs of your food truck

The purchase or conversion of your food truck is an investment you depreciate over several years. If you invest more than 2,900 euros in a year, you can use the small-scale investment deduction for an extra deduction. Fuel, maintenance, gas and purchasing are normal business costs.

Keep good track of your purchasing and spoilage, because with fresh food something is always lost. Honest records of what you buy and sell give you insight into your real margin and help you set your prices well.
